In 1880 there was an uprising of the AmaQwati and AmaMpondomise in Sulenkama against British rule in the Eastern Cape. This is their story and that of Hamilton Hope, a Magistrate appointed by the government of the Cape Colony. Did you hear that I was going to talk about Hope’s War, that war of 1880? Do you know why it is called Hope’s War? It was given that name because a magistrate, Mr Hamilton Hope, was killed in Qumbu during the fighting that took place. Truly, however, the correct name of the war should be Mhlontlo’s War because it began and ended with Mhlontlo. You young ones are looking confused. You do not know who Mhlontlo is? Tsk, tsk tsk. Young shoots of my tree, Mhlontlo is the great King of the amaMpondomise.
